Phraims neues Album„Hysteria“ zeigt sich so vielschichtig wie die Hintergründeder so oft diagnostizierten Hysterie. Musikalisch nuanciert und textlich pointiertgestatten die Eigenkompositionen tiefe Einblicke in emotionale Abgründe undHöhenflüge und lassen dabei genug Spielraum für subjektive Interpretationen. Die auffallend lyrischen Texte stammen mit Ausnahme einer Gedichtvertonungalle aus der Feder von Sängerin Nina Reiter und sind stark von Sylvia Plath undAnne Sexton, beide Vertreterinnen der Confessional Poetry, beeinflusst.

 

Das schweiz-österreichische Quartett wurde 2016 aus dem Wunsch herausgegründet, musikalisch neue Wege zu gehen und veröffentlichte bereits zweiAlben (2018 „/fɹeɪm/“, sowie 2020 „Tides“), die von der internationalen Pressehoch gelobt wurden. Auch nach einem Besetzungswechsel im Jahr 2020blieben Nina Reiter, Viola Hammer, Marc Mezgolits und Peter Primus Froschihrem Prinzip einer Working Band treu und arbeiten an ihrer Musik alsKollektiv.

Das Ergebnis dieser durch jahrelange Zusammenarbeit undgegenseitiges Vertrauen geprägten Verbindung ist ein kontrastreicher,wandelbarer Contemporary Jazz, der sich nicht schubladisieren lässt. Packende Grooves und atmosphärische Improvisationen, selbstbewusstesInterplay oder fragile Zwischenspiele sind kein Widerspruch, wenn viersouveräne musikalische Persönlichkeiten an einem Strang ziehen und so einausgeklügeltes Klangspektrum erschaffen, das genauso variantenreich wietiefgründig ist.

Phraim's new album "Hysteria" is as complex as the circumstances fromwhich hysteria is so often diagnosed. Musically nuanced and lyricallypointed, the original compositions allow deep insights into emotionalabysses and flights of fancy, leaving enough room for subjectiveinterpretations. The strikingly poetic lyrics, with the exception of onepoem setting, are all penned by singer Nina Reiter and are stronglyinfluenced by Sylvia Plath and Anne Sexton, both representatives ofconfessional poetry.

 

The Swiss-Austrian quartet was founded in 2016 out of a desire to breaknew musical ground and has already released two albums ("/fɹeɪm/" in2018 and "Tides" in 2020), which were highly praised by the internationalpress. Even after a line-up change in 2020, Nina Reiter, Viola Hammer, Marc Mezgolits and Peter Primus Frosch remained true to their principle ofa working band and work on their music as a collective.
